Why Is My French Bulldog So Big? Signs That Your Dog Is Getting Bigger

Last Modified: March 4, 2023

The French Bulldog is a small, compact breed that can weigh anywhere between 11 to 25 pounds. They are generally considered the smallest of all dog breeds in America.

Why Is My French Bulldog So Big

However, this does not mean they don’t come with their fair share of unique and adorable quirks.

One such trait about Frenchies is their size when compared to other dogs. For example, you would think that since they are so small (only 11-25 pounds) then they must be tiny by comparison right? Wrong!

A full grown adult Frenchie weighs in at around 30 pounds on average and some can even grow up to 40 or 45 pounds.

Why do these little guys get so big? The answer may lie within two factors: genetics and diet.

Why Is My French Bulldog So Big?

If you are a proud owner of a french bulldog, then chances are that you have heard the question “Why is your dog so big?” more than once. Frenchies come in many sizes and they all seem to be labeled as being too big or too small. It’s time for an explanation.

Signs That Your Frenchie Is Getting Bigger

The following are the signs that indicates that you french bulldog is gaining some weight;

  • Heavy Breathing

Your Frenchie is a growing pup!

Frenchie owners know that one of the best ways to make their pups happy is by playing with them.

There are endless games you can play with your dog, and all they need in return for some exercise and mental stimulation from these activities is time spent as well as positive reinforcement such as praise or food treats.

Heavy breathing means our little guy’s getting bigger. It just goes to show how much our dogs love us when we take care of them ’round the clock.

  • Get Tired Easily

Your furry four-legged friend may be gaining a little extra weight.

A tired French Bulldog is another sign of these bad habits, as the dog’s excessive snoring and difficulty climbing stairs are signs that they might not have enough energy to exercise or run around like it used to.

You can help your pup get back on track by feeding them healthy foods with high protein content such as lean meats and low calorie vegetables so their body begins burning off fat instead of storing it.

  • No Scratching Of The Ears

You may have noticed that your Frenchie is getting bigger and has been expressing a lot of itchiness. This could mean many things, but one possibility is ear mites.

If you can not scratch it yourself then it is time to take them to the vet for an examination.

Have you ever felt like there was something crawling in or around your ears?

Well if not because they are just too sensitive, maybe this means it is high-time for some flea medicine on those dogs.

  • No Defined Muscles

There is a way to tell if your Frenchie is getting bigger simply by looking at its face.

Your Frenchie’s nose should be proportionate with the rest of its body, and there will not be any bulging when you look in their eyes or cheeks.

No one knows how many people have French Bulldogs because they are so rare that only two million exist worldwide.

There may seem like no difference between different breeds from afar, but once you get closer up then these differences become more noticeable.

Some dogs might just need some food for energy while others can not even move without feeling nauseous.

How Can You Stop Your Frenchie From Gaining Weight?

The following are tips which can stop your little friend from gaining some weight;

  • Exercise

With the Poodle’s propensity to overeat, it is important for owners to take measures against obesity. Regular exercise can keep your dog in shape while also keeping them from eating too much.

Regular exercise with a Frenchie may not be as easy as you think.

These dogs have an insatiable appetite and love their food so they will eat heartily every time they get any opportunity, even when there isn’t anything available.

But thankfully we humans are smarter than our pets and know how to manage these little guys’ diets by making sure that exercising often means less pounds on their body weight scale.

  • Raw Food

Eating a diet of raw food can prevent your Frenchie from gaining weight. However, it is not for everyone.

Some dogs may find the change in their diet too difficult to adjust and you might need meat or other protein sources at times as well.

Eating a healthy raw-foods based meal plan is one way that owners can keep their pets’ weight down while giving them all the nutrients they require.

This style of feeding does not work for every dog though, sometimes an animal will have difficulty adjusting after making such a drastic dietary shift. So make sure there are supplements available if this starts happening with yours.

  • Correct Amount Of Food

Feeding your Frenchie the correct amount can help them maintain a healthy weight. Giving too many treats will cause even more problems, as they will start gaining excess amounts of pounds

And could be at risk for diabetes or heart issues later in life. Do not forget to measure out their food.

  • Decrease The Portion Size

In these difficult economic times, everyone is trying to save a few dollars. You can help your Frenchie from gaining weight by reducing the amount of food you feed him.

In these tough economic times, it is important for us all to be smart about our finances and try to stay on budget when we can.

Including yourself! One way that might make this easier is simply giving fewer treats each day.

If he gets more exercise in between meals than his smaller portion size should keep him at an even keel with regards to weight gain or loss.

Average Male French Dog Weight

Frenchies are popular dogs for many reasons, but one of the most significant ones is that they don’t require a lot in terms of exercise.

The average male French dog weight can range from 20-36 pounds and some females may be up to 30%.

Did you know there’s an international standard on how large your pup should be?

According to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), small breeds should not weigh more than 25% their adult body weight while medium sized breeds range between 27-40%, with larger breeds weighing 41 or more.

Frequently Asked Question

Q1:Can a French bulldog be too big?

The French bulldog is one of the smallest breeds around, but can they be too big? In general it’s said that your dog should not exceed more than 50 pounds in weight and an inch or two taller. If you want to get a bigger breed like an English Bulldog for example then keep this measurement in mind.

Q2:How do I make sure my French Bulldog eats healthy food for his size?

You might be wondering what to feed your French Bulldog. However, you should make sure that the food is appropriate for their size and weight because an overweight dog will have increased health problems.

To do this, simply measure out how much they are eating in pounds so that it’s a good fit with the percentage of weight given by their age on labels.

Q3:How much does a French Bulldog weigh at 10 weeks old?

A French Bulldog can weigh anywhere from 6 pounds to 20 pounds at 10 weeks old.

The average weight of a healthy, happy, playful pup is about 12-14 lbs when they are only ten weeks old.

Q4:What is the average French Bulldog weight and height?

The French Bulldog is a small, but sturdy dog. They tend to be about 11-13 inches high and weigh between 30-40 pounds.

The average weight of the French Bulldog ranges from 30 – 40 lbs., with an approximate height of 11″ – 13″.

Q4:Is it normal for a pet to gain weight as they age, or are there other factors at play?

Pets can become overweight because their age has slowed his/her metabolism so much he/she eats less than before when she was younger.

And would have been able to take care of themselves better by being physically stronger then. Whereas now due in part with old age her body cannot work like it used to.
